About The 6th Estate

The 4th Estate reports the news. The 5th Estate challenges it. The 6th Estate reads between the lines.

The Thesis

The 6th Estate is built around a two-tier promise: cover the major news of the day and the important stories beneath the headlines — the community-level angles, the verification gaps, and the connective tissue between events that mainstream media reports as isolated.

We are not trying to replace the 4th or 5th Estates. We occupy the gap between them: the 4th Estate has institutional trust, national distribution, and verification standards, but limited bandwidth to cover every community with nuance. The 5th Estate has proximity, authenticity, and speed, but usually lacks the resources or sourcing discipline to hold the record accountable at scale. The 6th Estate brings national scope, wire-service verification, and an editorial lens that treats historically underserved communities as core readership — not a sidebar.

The Voice

Verify

Every fact is cross-checked against two or more independent sources before it goes to press. A published verification ladder makes every story's sourcing standard auditable, not just asserted.

Center

Stories affecting underrepresented communities lead when they matter — not tucked into a monthly diversity column. Centering is a design choice, applied daily.

Elevate

Community spotlights that inspire readers and hold institutions accountable. We elevate the people building something, and the record worth defending.

Editorial Neutrality

The 6th Estate operates on a non-partisan editorial standard. Non-partisan does not mean neutral on facts — false claims are called false regardless of the source's party affiliation, and verified facts are reported as facts even when politically inconvenient. It means the newsroom does not carry a partisan editorial identity, and coverage decisions are not driven by which party benefits.

We structurally enforce this through neutral framing across every section. Fact-checks in Receipts apply to all parties, all administrations, and all officials without exception. The Common Thread is structurally multi-perspective — every edition features named voices representing different communities and stakeholder positions on the same event. Every elected official's party is identified on first reference.

What non-partisan is NOT: it is not false balance, not "both sides" of a settled fact, and not silence in the face of a verifiable lie. Community-lens coverage is a demographic frame, not a political one.

The Publisher

Corrections Policy

Corrections run above the fold in the next edition, dated and labeled as corrections. When we get something wrong, we say so plainly and in a place readers will see it — not buried at the bottom of a page. Silent edits are forbidden: we do not quietly alter a published story to erase an error. The record is the record, and the correction is part of it.
